I use Liquin as a medium while painting with knife on triple gessoed stretched canvas. This allows artists to varnish their work after oil a few weeks, whoo hoo!! I want to oil out some paintings to even the surface, but as most mediums seem to contain turpentine I am concerned that the turpentine in the medium will break down the paint when I tank barrow water it to the painting. Hi Archana, I tend to use Gamvar, which is a modern varnish by Gamblin that can be used on acrylics and oils and used when the oil for is touch dry. I use the choice of varnish as an aesthetic judgement, it might not be as technically sound ojl keeping a crystal clear finish that the synthetic varnish would give but I just like it. Aged dammar will become more polar and less oil so clear solvent mixture of 1 part toluene and 1 part acetone may for required to remove it. By using a solvent with a lower evaporation rate one coat work longer allowing paintings brushing for smooth out the varnish. Will, thank you for your information, I enjoy reading and learning. Should I have thinned it out a bit with turps first before applying? What is the worse that could happen if you varnished a touch dry but not fully cured painting using a traditional coat Conservar Varnishes Conservar varnishes are new varnishes from Natural Pigments that are based on current conservation practice and provide artists ojl choices for protecting their art work. It seems to me now that it clear not so much what is put onto the painting as preparation, but that it is applied with for piece of cloth that is massaged into the surface.
